Cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. They don’t just affect the elderly — around 200,000 children are blind due to cataracts.
Deolinda from Mozambique nearly became one of them. After noticing a growing white spot in her right eye, her mother Herminia took her to a local hospital. They were then referred to Maputo Central Hospital, which is supported by Light for the World.
There, Dr. Lacea Alfredo determined an operation was urgent: “Deolinda can barely see out of her right eye. She is very young, and her brain must learn how to see. We have to operate as soon as possible.” The operation was a success, and Deolinda has taken her first steps into a more self-determined future.
