Light for the World is pleased to announce changes to our International Board to support our mission to spark lasting change for disability rights and eye health.
Andreas Onea, Austria’s most successful para-swimmer and a well-known TV presenter, has been elected Chair of Light for the World’s International Board of Trustees.
Andreas Onea replaces Tom Shakespeare, who has stepped down as Chair after nearly a decade on the board. Tom Shakespeare — a renowned academic in disability rights, broadcaster, sociologist and activist — has steered and supported the organisation through a period of significant growth and innovation.
“I am so grateful to the hundreds of staff who make Light for the World what it is, and to the dozens of colleagues who have gone the extra mile to make me welcome, in all the countries where Light for the World works. I am very proud of what Light delivers to meet needs for eye care and disability inclusion,” Tom Shakespeare says.
Andreas Onea, who has competed in five Paralympic Games and become a champion for inclusive sports and media, has served on the International Board for several years and been Deputy Chair since 2024.
“I am proud to take on this role. Protecting the rights of people with disabilities and those with eye conditions is essential for building fair and inclusive societies,” Andreas Onea says.
“I have seen the remarkable things people with disabilities can achieve when given opportunities. Alongside my fellow board members, I am excited to continue supporting Light for the World’s mission to drive sustainable change with lasting impact.”

As part of the board changes, Stanley Mutuma, a renowned disability rights activist and lawyer, and Klara Landau, a distinguished ophthalmology professor and researcher, have been elected Deputy Chairs.
Amollo Ambole, an urban futurist who champions accessible city planning, has joined the International Board after serving on Light for the World Kenya’s board.
