A tribute to Albert Bock [1974 – 2018]
With deep sadness, Light for the World announces the loss of our colleague and friend, Albert Bock.
Albert was Light for the World’s online strategist and web manager for more than seven years.
He was a loyal and dedicated colleague, who strongly believed in Light for the World’s cause and the dignity of every human being. As an important member of the Light for the World “Gender Workgroup”, he raised awareness for the rights of women with disabilities in developing countries – one of the most neglected groups worldwide.
As a linguist and language enthusiast he substantially shaped Light for the World’s rights-based disability inclusive terminology. He championed the correct use of our written and verbal language, to ensure respectful and empowering communications.
Albert built and texted the website you are reading today. With his great knowledge in ICT systems he has designed the website to be as accessible as possible, so that everyone can read, comment and participate. The passionate dedication he had to his work is also shown by the website he created for Her Abilities, our award celebrating the achievements of women with disabilities www.her-abilities-award.org.
Albert's kind nature enabled him to make friends across the globe, from Bolivia to Papua New Guinea. His loss is felt very deeply by all who were lucky enough to know him, and by all of our team.
Albert was loved and respected as a brilliant colleague, a skilled communicator, a passionate cook and most of all a family man. He brought commitment, precision and strong values to all that he did. In whatever role we knew him in, and from whatever vantage point, he stood apart as someone special.
Our thoughts are with his family, especially with his wife Julia and their two lovely children, at this difficult time.
